Ralph is a guard in the employ of the Earl of Arundel at Clun Castle. Ralph is a simple, amiable fellow with a toothy grin and only warm intentions. He is friends with Adelaide and spends much of his time talking to his fellow guard, the sullen Alfred, who rarely replies. Adelaide finds it remarkable that a man as gentle and happy as Ralph became a soldier.
Ralph is noted for being in possession of a magnificent weaving, on a canvas cloth, depicting a boar hunt, though no one, including Ralph himself, knows from where he obtained it. Adelaide believes that the work of art is so splendid and famous that a thief would have to travel a very long way with it until it would not be recognised.
