Adelaide is the gaolkeeper at Clun Castle, in the service of the Earl of Arundel, Richard FitzAlan. Small of stature with dirty blonde hair, Adelaide inherited her position from her father. Like her father, she is originally from Cornwall, in the south west of England, but her family then moved up to Shropshire.
Not only does Adelaide keep the gaol at the castle but she is also tasked with extracting information from captured Welsh prisoners, to assist English attempts to put down the continuing Welsh rebellion. She has particular personal involvement in this pursuit having lost her daughter, Matilda, to an attack from the Welsh Dragon outlaw group. The pain of her daughter's death fires a strong-mindedness in Adelaide, interspersed with intense emotional turmoil that she often struggles to repress.
